The popularity of silver charms today is a revival of a tradition that returns to ancient times. They have held different meanings in different times, but always in common is that the wearer of charms makes a statement.  In some societities they are  looked at with superstition as a protection or magic spell as they did in ancient Babylonia, Assyria, Persia, and Egypt until the Middle Ages.

Charms may be a religious statement, stemming back to the carrying of a fish charm under one’s clothing during the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire. The fish is a symbol of Christ from his first disciples who were fishermen. What more appropriate charm for these Christians in hiding to choose! Today of course, people of many different faiths wear religious charms openly as an outward sign of their belief.

They can be worn as a symbol of love, just as when servicemen returned home from World War II with little charms as gifts for their loved ones.  Silver charms can be symbolic of major events in one’s life, as was so popular in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Teenage girls wore their bracelets proudly, most having received them as young girls, with a charm for each big event from religious landmarks, to their Sweet 16 birthday and graduation. After marriage, a wedding charm was added, later to add a charm for each of their children born. A charm bracelet was a fashionable version of a diary worn on the wrist, telling of not only major events, but also of hobbies and other interests.

Yet this fashion statement was not new, either, as history gives Queen Victoria credit with elevating the superstition originally associated with charms into the fashion we now hold charm bracelets to have.

Why silver charms? Silver is attractive and distinguished, known as a symbol of prosperity. Silver is a good metal to use to make charms. It is a soft metal that can be fashioned into a variety of differently shaped charms.
