An extending dining table is a great alternative to a fixed size table. Some houses do not have the room for a very large dining table to be in place all the time but it is really useful to have the flexibility to extend a table from its smaller size when hosting a big dinner party. The rest of the time a smaller table is perfect for breakfast with the family, having an idle moment with the newspaper and a mug of coffee or for a romantic dinner for two. An extendable dining table can also be just a useful outside as in. It is a great solution in allowing easy storage in the winter months.
Although you can of course change the size, getting the dimensions right are just as important as with a standard table. Remember to check how much space you need to sit everyone comfortably with and without the extension. Extendable dining tables come in virtually any size and shape and companies are out there who would be more than happy to custom build to your exact requirements and specification if you cannot find what you want.
Styles include anything from a classic oak table to a glass or metal modern alternative. When choosing the colour, a light colour will give the suggestion of space whilst a dark colour will give the impression that the room is smaller. Back on the subject of space, it is worth remembering that you will have extra chairs to store when the table is not fully extended. Furthermore, some extending dining table mechanisms are simply an additional segment or segments of the table top that are slotted in place. They must also be stored when not in use. Some tables do however include a butterfly extension which is a built-in piece of wood that remains integral to the table and folds away underneath when not in use.
Once you have made a decision and have purchased your table, regular dusting, the occasional polish and waxing or oiling as indicated by the manufacturer will keep your table in good condition for many years to come.
