Times are hard, which means many of us are trying to save money on our interior as well as in every other area. In some cases, it is easy to save a dollar or two and no one is any the wiser, but with key items in your home it can be a false economy. That is generally the rule with black area rugs : better no rug at all than a cheap one.
Why is that? Here are a few reasons.
Black Shows Quality
Imagine a plain round black rug on your floor. It is the ideal shape and color for your interior but there is really nothing to draw your eye away from the quality of the rug itself. The giveaway slight sheen of a synthetic rug will be obvious. The luxurious pile (or the lack of it) will be evident. Even with a patterned rug, the depth of colors in an expensive rug would look far superior to the grayish tones in the black dye of a cheap one.
“Sticking” to the Floor
Whereas a thin, cheap rug will move about the floor and wrinkle up, a heavy pile quality rug with thick backing will almost seem to stick to the floor. You may need a non slip backing to prevent any movement at all but this may not be necessary especially if you have a large rug.
Looking Good Over Time
Of course, how your rug looks over time depends on how much it gets used and walked on but if it is in a busy part of your home, quality definitely counts. Whereas a cheap rug is likely to wear and go thin over time you should find that a quality rug lasts far longer, years and years in fact. And a rug in natural materials such as wool should resist soiling too, although of course with a black rug this will be less of a problem than with a pale one.
As you can easily see, although it’s important to maintain a frugal state of mind these days, the purchase of your black area rug is not the best place to cut corners and try to save a dollar or two.
